While Taco Bell might not quite match the global success of some its fast-food competitors, it’s pop-culture cachet is near untouchable. From branding coups like the “FourthMeal” slogan and the iconic chihuahua, to the invention of a language all of its own, the chain has captured our imagination with its sometimes bizarro antics and its munchies-friendly image. Among people who actively hate and avoid fast food, Taco Bell is often the one exception they’ll make. CrunchWrap Supremes have power like that.
Taco Bell was founded in California in 1962 by Glen Bell, an entrepreneur who had previously run a hot-dog stand called Bell’s Drive-In, as well as a taco joint called Taco-Tia. By 1967, there were 100 Taco Bells operating in L.A. next to dozens of other local fast-food Mexican chains. In his book Taco USA, journalist Gustavo Arellano argues that these Mexican-American hybrids were “a gateway drug…a bridge, a guide, for the American gut,” providing a safe entry point Mexican food even as it appeared to mangle its ingredients and origins.
Recently, Taco Bell has continued its assault on the popular conscience with meme-worthy creations like Doritos Locos Tacos, which sold more than half a billion units in their first year. It’s also been a game-changer in terms of how a big brand can use social media, running an infamously cheeky Twitter account, fostering a playful relationship with YouTube megastar Tyler Oakley, and even using the teen-favored app Snapchat to announce the return of the Beefy Crunch Burrito.
Regardless of what you think about the flavor of the ground beef, there’s no doubt that Taco Bell is one of the most creative fast-food joints in the game. Still, it’s had their fair share of slip-ups along the way. Here are ten things you might not know (or remember) about Taco Bell, including is role in Demolition Man and its beef with 50 Cent.

Taco Bell was the first national chain to get rid of its kids' menu.
In a surprise move, Taco Bell recently announced that it would nix kids' menus (plastic toys and all) for good, making it the first national chain to do so. The decision has been cheered on by groups such as the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which said, "Taco Bell is taking a constructive step forward by no longer using toys to encourage kids to pester their parents to go to a restaurant." Here's the thing, though: When a restaurant offers cheesy quesadillas, bright blue caffeine, and what might be the most addictive deep-fried cinnamon dessert in chain history, we doubt the kids are going there just for an Avengers action figure.

50 Cent is not a fan of Taco Bell's Value Menu.
In order to promote its Value Menu, Taco Bell sent out a fake letter addressed to 50 Cent to all the major networks, jokingly asking him to change his name to any of the prices on the menu—79 Cent, 88 Cent, or 99 Cent. Fiddy was not amused and slapped Taco Bell with a lawsuit claiming that it illegally used his name to promote the menu without paying him the millions of dollars he would usually receive for an endorsement. 50 Cent and Taco Bell settled the lawsuit out of court for a sum that could in theory buy him and all of G-G-G-G-Unit tacos for life.

In the movie Demolition Man, Taco Bell is the only restaurant that exists.
In the early 90s film Demolition Man, starring Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes, Taco Bell is the only fast food chain to survive in a futuristic world where franchises have been at war. In the film, it's depicted as a fine-dining establishment, with valet parking and a full-on dance floor (something we not-so-secretly wish would happen in real life_. The futuristic purple and pink Taco Bell logo in the film also inspired the chain's one and only logo change in it's entire existence. In the European version of the film, Taco Bell was replaced by Pizza Hut since it didn't have any locations on the continent.

Taco Bells in Mexico were marketed as American food (and they were total fails).
The Tex-Mex chain has managed to open well-received locations in unexpected countries such as India, Singapore, and Costa Rica. But it has failed horribly—not once, but twice—when attempting to open locations in Mexico. (Perhaps not surprising, since Mexicans need no help in "thinking outside the bun"). Taco Bell attempted to market the chain as American food and even called the tacos "tacostadas" to avoid insulting the local population. Although Mexico recently surpassed us as the fattest country in the world, our neighbors to the south don't look like they'll be going loco for Doritos taco shells any time soon.
-
The Chinese Taco Bell was called Taco Bell Grande, and it was a full-service restaurant.
While Taco Bell was marketed as American food in Mexico, it was given a fancier spin in China. Instead of the usual emphasis on cheap and quick, cheesy-beefy goodness, the three locations that opened were dubbed Taco Bell Grandes, and they were run as full-service restaurants similar to On The Border Mexican Grill. The franchises floundered and have all been closed.
-
The chain once promised every American a free taco.
Taco Bell has always had a knack for crazy publicity stunts. Back in 2001, when the Mir space station was scheduled for a crash landing, Taco Bell bought out an expensive insurance policy and anchored a massive floating target in the ocean around 15km off the coast of Australia. If the core of the space station hit the large bull's-eye painted with the words "Free Taco Here" in purple lettering, every American would get a free taco. Sadly, the space station landed nowhere near the target and Americans had to returning to scrounging for taco money in their couches.
-
Taco Bell was all set to make the greatest infomerical ever...until the talent died.
In June 2009, Taco Bell signed a deal with Billy Mays, of OxiClean fame, to shoot a series of infomercial-style commercials for the chain. Sadly, Mays passed away before this genius idea could come to fruition.
-
The brand once punk'd America better than Ashton Kutcher ever could.
In a well-planned April Fool's prank, Taco Bell took out full-page ads in six major newspapers to proclaim that it had purchased the Liberty Bell and was going to rename it the Taco Liberty Bell. What we can't understand is why people became so incensed. We're pretty okay with freedom tasting like nacho cheese and Fire Sauce.
-
Willie Nelson did a Taco Bell commerical.
What do a chihuahua and Willie Nelson have in common? The fact that they both starred in Taco Bell's TV spots. The chain managed to convince the legendary musician to participate in an advertisement in the '90s (the fact that Willie was in major debt, to the tune of $16.7 million, probably helped). Not only was the ad and its accompanying song completely epic, but it also inspired someone at Texas Monthly to pen a paper with perhaps the best title of all time: "Deconstructing Willie: Carnality, Castration Anxiety, and Jouissance in Willie Nelson’s Taco Bell Commercial."Note: The video above is comedian Bill Hick's parody of the commercial.
-
Taco Bell used to have a sandwich on the menu.
While one of its more famous slogans might be "Think Outside of the Bun," Taco Bell did once put a sandwich on the menu called the "Bell Beefer." This curiously named creation was essentially the components of a regular beef taco shoved into a bun—a sloppier take on a sloppy joe, if you will. The Bell Beefer was introduced in the mid-1980s, but like many things from the decade, it faded to oblivion.
